Israeli Stage Goes on the Road with 'Oh God'

EDGE READ TIME: 2 MIN.

Do theatre goers know that throughout the year they can listen to professional staged readings of the world's most vibrant, contemporary international drama? All of these plays have been translated into English, feature some of the biggest talent in Boston and sometimes (as is the case with Cristina Castrillo's "Crack") even feature original music.

This month, Guy Ben-Aharon's Israeli Stage is traveling throughout the Northeast with one of their most popular shows. Anat Gov's "hilarious and poignant 'Oh God'" will play in over 20 different locations and give university students, in particular, exposure to this new Israeli work.

In the play, a psychotherapist and single mother of an autistic child, Ella (Maureen Keiller), gets a visit from a new and rather desperate patient, God (Will Lyman).

Known for her leftist politics, macabre humor and social messages, Anat Gov studied theatre at Tel Aviv University and began her career as an actress. She then wrote for several successful television programs, some of which her husband, Gidi Gov, directed.

Her most successful play was the award winning "Happy Ending," which, somewhat autobiographically, dealt with the protagonist's fight against colon cancer. Gov died in 2012, five years after being diagnosed with the disease and left a significant imprint on Israeli Theatre with plays such as "Best Friends," "Lysistrata," "Househusband" and "A Warm Family."
